Pirates of the Caribbean 5- Production and Writing

Initially, during the release of ‘On Stranger Tides’ in 2011 it was confirmed Terry Rossio was in charge of writing the fifth installment of Pirates of The Caribbean. This was at the time when Disney had decided to shoot the fourth installment and the fifth installment back-to-back. The back-to-back production didn’t see light and on January 11, 2013 Jeff Nathanson was signed for scripting duties. On May 29, 2013 the task for Direction of Pirates of the Caribbean was given to Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg. The delay in production for the fifth installmenthas been due to a number of factors. With Johnny Depp’s Lone Ranger, a Disney Production losing a little over $190 million in 2013, bigwigs in Disney had been reconsidering budget limits. Budget issues were being discussed and that caused delay in production of the fifth Pirates installment. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said “It’s all a factor. We want a script that everyone’s signed off on and a budget that everyone’s signed off on”. Finally in 2014, the script was given the green signal by Disney with the release date scheduled for 7th July, 2017.

In an interview on April 13, 2014, Johnny Depp revealed Disney Productions had invited him to collaborate with Jeff Nathanson in regard with the script for the fifth Pirate installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales. Johnny Depp elaborated on the point that he wanted to bring in a fresh perspective, something totally new to the franchise. Depp said “Everyone involved wants the script to be right and perfect. So we have gone on to do other things (in the meantime). We are still going to do the film together. I enjoy them immensely. They are super talented. They have a great sense of humor. I think they have a really fun approach to what we are going to do with the next 'Pirates.' Very happily and proudly, I have welcomed taking part in the story and working directly with the screenwriter (Jeff Nathanson) he and I. It's working out really well that way. So I have high hopes for that 'Pirates 5' because if that's really the last one, which it probably is, I feel that we owe it to the audience who went and saw the films so many times. We’ll do it right and end it on a high note.”
