100 Greatest Bollywood Horror Movies

Unlike other movie genres, Horror is not a very popular genre with the masses in India. However, Hindi horror movies have had a cult following among horror enthusiasts. This space showcases a list of the best Bollywood horror movies.

While the horror genre has been prevalent in the Hindi film industry for a long time, it’s only recently that horror movies have been able to create ripples at the box office. Unlike in present times, in the past, filmmakers did not have a lot to play with in terms of big-budgets and special effects. Directors in the past had to make do with the available budget at hand to make a horror flick. Many low budget horror movies were made in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

While low budget B grade Bollywood horror movies did not find many takers in the past, the same low-budget horror movies have garnered interest among many horror aficionados in present times. Throughout the 80s it was Ramsay Productions that lead the wave of horror movies in India. Most of the horror movies that hit single screen cinemas in the 80s and 90s were released under the Ramsay Brothers banner.

While not many Ramsay movies remain etched in the mind, the fact remains, Ramsay production house did set the ball rolling for the horror genre in India.

Since the 2000s, production houses and directors have been attempting various horror genres, and the results have been astounding. Many Bollywood horror movies have done exceptionally good business at the box office. It’s a known fact that horror is not an easy genre to tackle. It is never easy to scare an audience with visuals. Various elements in horror have to be combined aesthetically to evoke fright and fear. Aside from visuals, sound effects and special effects have become exceedingly important in horror movies. Since the 2000s, the budgets on Bollywood horror movies have increased tremendously, and some of the movies from the 2000s have been impeccable in every way.

In India, Bollywood horror movies are popular with youth. College goers form the majority of audience for horror flicks in India. The sound and visual effects used in the horror genre have improved significantly in India. Horror movies have garnered a great deal of interest among filmmakers in recent years. The horror genre may not become a part of mainstream in all things Bollywood, but one thing’s for sure… horror movies will get bigger and better in the years to come.
