While it is unclear when the term “item number” or “item song” was coined, the essence of these songs have been prevalent since the 50s and 60s. While a raunchy dance in a skimpy outfit was reserved for sidekicks in the past, now actresses playing the lead role hog the limelight with what are called item songs. Well, a lot has changed since the 50s, 60s and 70s, in terms of technology. The camera angles on some of the item songs in present times makes the jaw drop quite literally. What is an item song? An item song is a musical dance performance by a girl or guy in a movie. The purpose of an item number or item song in Bollywood movies is to attract the masses and enthrall audiences.
Item songs started gaining in prominence in the 80s and since then have become an integral part of Bollywood movies.
In present times, every commercial Bollywood movie has at least one hot item song if not more. Hot Item songs often revolve around a pretty actress doing her dance performance to get the gaze from audiences as they hum the tune. Theatrical releases and promos of new Bollywood films include clips of item songs… a marketing strategy to invite the masses to watch the movie after its release. Item songs are sexy, foot-thumping, provocative and often woven around catchy lyrics. Hot Item songs are used in movies to gather the masses that help in a big way at box office collection.
